Prudence was a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, an Amazon Best Book Pick in Romance and Sci-Fi/Fantasy categories, and Library Reads pick. The hardcover editions of the Custard Protocol series are no longer in print. This is the exciting next generation spin-off series from the Parasol Protectorate books, but it is not necessary to have read those first. Faced with a dire crisis (and an embarrassing lack of bloomers), Rue must rely on her good breeding – and her metanatural abilities – to get to the bottom of it all. Soon, she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier’s wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves. When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama (“Rue” to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do – she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India. Introducing the Custard Protocol series, in which Prudence travels to India for Queen, country…and the perfect pot of tea.

5/23/2023 0 Comments The golden notebook 1962The Golden Notebook resonates with the concerns and experiences of a great many women and is a true modern classic, thoroughly deserving of its reputation as a feminist bible. In this authentic, taboo-breaking novel, Lessing brings the plight of women’s lives, from obscurity behind closed doors, into broad daylight. Anna’s struggle to unify the various strands of her life – emotional, political and professional – amasses into a fascinating encyclopaedia of female experience in the ‘50s. Authoress Anna Wulf attempts to overcome writer’s block by writing a comprehensive ‘golden notebook’ which draws together the preoccupations of her life, each of which is examined in a different notebook: sources of her creative inspiration in a black book, communism in a red book, the breakdown of her marriage in a yellow book, and day-to-day emotions and dreams in a blue book. One of the most important books of the growing feminist movement of the 1950s, it was brought to a wider public by the Nobel Prize award to Doris Lessing in 2007. He also grows to be more empathetic and kind through his experience with his curse. He was incredibly cunning before and he is still now, but he uses that personality trait for a good cause. He doesn’t completely change from how he was before, either. He’s definitely flawed, and I liked that Brigid Kemmerer didn’t gloss over or romanticize how he was before the curse. Harper just got kidnapped, but still doesn’t hesitate to fight back. Hard steel slams into my waist, just below my ribcage. She takes another step - but then her expression shifts, her eyes darken, and she swings. I extend my hand and give her an encouraging look. At least she can be tamed as easily as the others. “The girl watches this exchange and then draws a long breath and takes a tentative step forward, the bar held in front of her. This is from Rhen and Harper’s first time meeting each other, from Rhen’s perspective: She’s established as a brave fighter right from the beginning. She also makes an incredible entrance into the world of Emberfall, complete with a tire iron in hand. She’s determined and stubborn, but also deeply caring and empathetic. We get the story through two points of view, Harper, our “Beauty”, and Rhen, our “Beast”. Please note: This review contains spoilers, which have been marked with “(SPOILER)”.Ī Curse So Dark and Lonely is a YA romance that retells the story of Beauty and the Beast. Perhaps her best-known adaptation was that of Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth (1980), which reflected her own feelings about war and women's struggle for education, but she also wrote many documentaries which were widely admired for the skills she brought to the small screen. But she earned a living by writing scripts, mainly serials and documentary dramas, for television – work for which she never received her full meed of praise. Elaine Morgan, author of the international best-seller The Descent of Woman, a feminist view of evolution, enjoyed a brief celebrity shortly after its publication in 1972, mainly on account of her brilliantly argued thesis that humans had their origins in the sea and that women are not biologically or socially inferior to men. 5/22/2023 0 Comments This One Problem by M.C. PeaseI thought taking on the refurbishment of the old warehouse was too much, but luckily a builder friend persuaded me to go for it.” “It was a huge commitment to do what I did, but I was tired of being messed around by landlords. “If we hadn’t acquired the freehold then, we wouldn’t be here now,” the straight-talking Kevin admits. Looking at the neat and well-organised store today, with thousands of lines superbly presented, and 28 spaces in the car park outside, it’s clear that his bold move has paid off. Nobody could ever accuse Kevin of not having confidence in himself. To convert an untidy three-storey warehouse – formerly the storage unit of a musical instrument importer – and to the knock down the adjacent cinema, he took a bank loan of £260,000, the equivalent of about £740,000 in today’s values. To the dismay of some in the village near Leeds, Kevin oversaw the demolition of the long-closed cinema in 1991 when he was creating his vision for the business his grandfather had opened in 1918. Nowadays that exact spot is about six feet from the cash desk of his family’s hardware and houseware store, Pease of Garforth. In 1962, AS a talented 11-year-old, Kevin Pease stood on the stage of the Garforth Cinema playing saxophone in a youngsters’ pop group, entertaining the audience during the breaks at the kids’ Saturday matinee film performance. 5/22/2023 0 Comments The mysterious island novelAt the end, however, it is realized that Captain Nemo, from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has secretly been helping the settlers. The novel describes their attempts not only to survive but also, with the aid of the scientific and technological know-how, to rebuild their world from the meager resources of the island. The plot depicts a group of men who have become castaways stranded on an island in the Pacific during the American Civil War. The Mysterious Island was published in 1874, and it is one of Verne's longest novels. Although several editions under the same title are in print, most reproduce a bowdlerized nineteenth-century translation which changes the names of the characters, omits several important scenes, and ideologically censors Verne's original text. First new unabridged translation since 1876 of one of Verne's best-known novelsĪt a time when Verne is making a comeback in the US as a mainstream literary figure, Wesleyan is pleased to publish a new translation of one of his best-known novels, The Mysterious Island. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Books by michael mossTo learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice.
